George Washington married Martha Dandridge Custis because they shared a strong attraction and had a mutually beneficial relationship. Martha was a wealthy widow, and George, a prominent figure, was drawn to her social standing and skills in managing her estates. While some historians suggest the marriage was partly strategic, letters between them reveal a genuine affection and deep respect for each other.

When Martha wrote of her husband, she would always refer to him as Mr. Washington or “the General.” In at least one surviving letter to his wife, George refers to her as “Patsy.” George and Martha had a strong and loving relationship; their marriage lasted over 40 years. Observers of the couple noted that she “was mad about him”, they were excessively fond of one another, and that their relationship was “one of tenderness and respect”.
