Introducing The Washingtons

Introducing The Washingtons

George Washington

A military hero and high-ranking officer in the colonies, George was born in Popes Creek, Westmoreland County and grew up at Ferry Farm, Stafford County. He inherited Mount Vernon after the death of his half-brother, Lawrence. Through his paternal grandmother, George Washington was descended from King Edward III and was related to the Churchills. Washington’s paternal ancestors came from Sulgrave Manor, a Northamptonshire estate about seventy-five miles northwest of London.

Martha Washington

A widow with two children, Martha was from the Tidewater area of Virginia. She inherited land and enslaved people after the death of her first husband, Daniel Parke Custis.

Introducing The Washingtons – The couple met in 1758 and married on January 6, 1759 at Martha’s home in New Kent County. They had a powerful attraction to each other. Martha was the model of a President’s Lady, cheerful, attentive, and appreciative. She spent about half of the Revolutionary War at the front, and helped manage the Washingtons’ estates.
