George Washington and Martha Dandridge Custis’s love story began when they reconnected in 1758, several years after a polite first meeting. Martha was a wealthy widow with two young children, and George was a recently returned soldier.

They were immediately attracted to each other, courted throughout the spring and summer, and married on January 6, 1759. Their relationship, though sometimes marked by separation, grew into a loving, forty-year partnership built on mutual respect and tenderness. 

  • A lasting partnership: Their marriage lasted over 40 years. Observers noted their relationship as one of great tenderness and respect. Despite the hardships of the Revolutionary War, they maintained a strong bond, and George wrote of his love for her with deep affection. 
  • A second meeting: After her first husband’s death, Martha was a prominent and wealthy widow. George, who had known her as Daniel’s wife, reconnected with her at a social gathering in Williamsburg.
  • Mutual attraction: They were both attracted to each other, finding genuine companionship and friendship. They spoke for a long time that first night, and George was a frequent visitor to her estate, the “White House”.
  • A speedy courtship: Their courtship progressed quickly through the spring of 1758. George was drawn to Martha’s kindness and interest in him as a person, while Martha was pleased with his interaction with her children and his attention to her.

Marriage and family: They married on January 6, 1759. George became a devoted stepfather to Martha’s two children, John “Jacky” Parke Custis and Martha “Patsy” Parke Custis.
