The French and Indian War took place from 1754 to 1763. During this period, George Washington served as a military leader in the Virginia Regiment and, in 1758, he courted and began a relationship with Martha Dandridge Custis, whom he married on January 6, 1759.

French and Indian War (1754–1763)

  • George Washington participated in the conflict from its early days, serving as a military leader for the Virginia Regiment.
  • His actions, including the initial skirmish at Jumonville Glen in 1754, helped spark the war.
  • Washington also played a key role in the successful British and colonial capture of Fort Duquesne in 1758.

George and Martha Washington

  • George Washington met Martha Dandridge Custis in 1758, during the final years of the war.
  • He married Martha on January 6, 1759, after the French and Indian War had concluded.
  • Their marriage combined their fortunes, and they moved to Mount Vernon to raise her two surviving children from her first marriage.
